City to Develop Parking Plan affecting Huning Highlands

by Amberley Pyles

In order for businesses and residents to re-locate to Huning Highlands and the EDO business district, business owners and families need to feel confident that their parking needs will be met. In many sections of the neighborhood, parking is becoming limited.

Similar to Nob Hill, EDO has requested that the city install parking meters on Central and on the 100 blocks of the side streets. The meters will end either 150 feet from Central or at the first residence, whichever comes first. Both Councilor Benton and the mayor are in support of meters, so traffic engineering is hoping to install them within the next six months. T striping will designate parking spots, and our neighborhood association has the right to request parking permits, which both councilor Benton and the EDO neighborhood association support. We are currently meeting with Councilor Benton’s office and the city’s traffic and engineering department to determine possible parameters for this residential parking permit program. Zones around Highland Park, Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Greek Orthodox Church, and Lead and Coal will probably remain areas of free parking, but other areas of the neighborhood could have parking permits.
