DRAFT of New Guidelines for Modifying our Historic Homes

The City of Albuqueruqe Landmarks and Urban Conservation Commision has developed a brilliantly clear, easy to follow set of guidelines for making modifications to our homes. The document, just released in draft form, is available on this website on the Newsletters and Other Downloads page. The purpose of the handbook is to provide guidance for improvements to historic properties. It provides a framework for selecting the most appropriate treatment when planning an exterior projet on a historic property. Check it out. Dear Property Owner in the Huning Highland Historic District and Overlay Zone:

RE: Development Guidelines

Your property is located in a historic overlay zone and is subject to the Landmarks and Urban Conservation Ordinance. The ordinance requires that alterations to existing properties, new construction and demolition of existing properties be reviewed and approved by the Landmarks and Urban Conservation Commission (LUCC).

The ordinance also requires that specific development guidelines (design guidelines) be adopted by the LUCC for the overlay zone. The guidelines provide guidance to property owners who are planning a building project and to the LUCC when evaluating proposals to alter or demolish a building or construct a new building.

The City Planning Department has recommended enhanced development guidelines for the Huning Highland Overlay Zone to replace the current development guidelines that were adopted in 1979.

The LUCC will conduct two public hearings in association with the adoption of revised development guidelines for the Huning Highland historic overlay zone. The first hearing is to be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 14, 2010. This initial hearing is intended to be a working session, and the input of the property owners is desirable.

A draft of the proposed document will be posted on the City of Albuquerque Planning Department website at www.cabq.gov/planning/lucc and also on the Huning Highland Historic District Association website www.hhhda.squarespace.com . Copies will also be available at City Planning, 600 2^nd St. NW 3^rd floor.

The second hearing will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Both are regularly scheduled LUCC public hearings held in the basement hearing room at City Planning, 600 2^nd St. NW.
